Landslide in NH-8, two workers killed

Massive landslide caused by an unscientific under-construction road side drain at 47 Mile area of National Highway-8 under Dhalai district on Thursday, two construction workers died on the spot and few other sustained injuries building Sources said that like other days, a large group of construction workers started their drain construction works at the national highway portion of 47-Mile area, suddenly big chunk debris mixed with stones collapsed on them from the hilltop.

As a result two labourers identified as Swapan Majumder (42) of Udaipur and Hurupu Bardoli (22) of Assam died on the spot. After the incident was reported, police and Fire-Brigade personnel had rushed to the spot while the disaster management group was conspicuous by absence despite repeated phone calls.  After one hour of the landslide, the firefighters with help from other labourers managed to recover two dead bodies from the deep debris by removing mud soil and stone chips. Firefighters shifted one body to Teliamura hospital and another one to Dhalai district hospital.

Police sources said that after the landslide incident, the agency engaged with the construction of NH-8 cleared the debris and normal traffic movement has resumed in that portion.
